THE IMPACT

Taking Part In Our Community

ABOUT ME

Putting My Passions
to Work

Throughout my four years in high school, I have spent each minute working towards making others feel welcome and accepted in my community. There is no greater feeling than being able to extend a hand to someone who might want it. I recognize problems that matter to me and work to find solutions. Persistence is a motto and I am accustomed to being told to get over it; however, nothing will ever change if  we simply 'get over it.'

During my senior year, I took on the responsibility to act on my civic duty. I am a proud Kansan, but I know where my state does not succeed. As a state, we pride ourselves as a state for the working class, yet LGBTQ+ members of the Kansas workforce has no legal precedent for filing a lawsuit against discrimination.  This has driven me to where I am now. I will no longer be compliant with a system that fails its people. That is why I will fight.

THE COMMUNITY

Everyone Is Included

We all have communities and circles that we identify with the most; for me specifically, choosing one of the many communities I identify with over another is quite challenging. Luckily, I don't have to choose just one.

My first community was my home town. The people I see every day at the gas station or on my way to church are the people that raised me. I love every unique and quirky individual I've met and will meet. I want to do my first community justice, and that community will always be a part of who I am.

At the end of my eighth-grade year, I came out as gay. I am nothing but grateful I had the courage and support to be unapologetically myself. The LGBTQ+ community is my second association; this community is loving, accepting, optimistic, and encouraging. Without their support, I would not be who I am today.

These two communities, as well as my association with the state of Kansas and a citizen of the United States, there are always improvements that can be made to better the lives of everyone in my communities.
